S5LECT PROJECT

S5LECT PROJECT

About

The S5LECT – SatCom and 5G Link, Edge and CybersecuriTy – project, led by SNCF and developed by Railenium, GTS (Hitachi Rail), Radiolabs, and CEIT, aims to develop a seamless handover functionality between 5G terrestrial network, satellite link and GSM-R communication system.

In automotive and railway sectors, there is a major need to increase digitalization. This digitalization will answer the fact automation is increasing with wireless sensors and communication systems. Railways need to improve current signalling and automation to manage traffic better and smarter. These tech upgrades will help railways increase traffic with future systems.

The S5LECT project will thus study combining land and satellite networks for critical railway tasks. It will last 30 months and aims to create a seamless handover between networks, check cybersecurity risks, propose new edge computing designs, and prove the concepts in a lab.

The project outputs will help develop satellite communication solutions for railways and support testing activities to create more reliable wireless communication prototypes, speeding up the delivery of next-generation wireless communications for all railway segments.

RAILENIUM

ABOUT

The Technological Research Institute for the railway sector, implements innovation projects by creating partnerships between industry and academia. It coordinates the implementation of innovation projects that meet the challenges of the sector in conjunction with the public authorities. Railenium’s mission is to support the development of the rail industry in the face of two major challenges: the acceleration of modal shift and competition from emerging countries. The IRT is committed to developing, validating, and testing innovative technologies and solutions which must meet four priority challenges for the sector: increasing transport capacity at iso-infrastructure, increasing reliability in service, reducing and controlling costs, and reducing time to market.
In response to these challenges, Railenium has set up three strategic programs included in the strategic sector contract: Railway Test Centre, Autonomous Train and Railway Modelling and Forecasting
.

CONTRIBUTION

In this project, Railenium will contribute to the user needs and definition of scenarios in WP2. Railenium will provide technical lead for the cybersecurity and the Edge computing tasks in WP3 and will contribute to the Associated with document integration and tests at TRL4 in WP4. Railenium will be responsible of WP5 for the dissemination.
